News in brief - 23 January 2026

Atom bank has announced a raft of rate cuts to its near prime mortgage range, with its 85% LTV products being cut by 0.10%. As a result, rates on near prime products will now begin at 4.74%. The rate changes follow research from Atom which revealed that 93% of brokers had seen an increase in enquiries from clients with adverse credit in 2025, while 74% expect to see a further rise in interest this year. The bank has repeatedly enhanced its near prime proposition in order to provide a wider range of options for borrowers with imperfect credit histories. Last year, it introduced two new product fee tiers, available at £1,500 and £1,995.

Nationwide has extended its loan-to-income lending to up to six times for home movers and remortgagers who are looking to move up the property ladder or get a new mortgage deal at up to 95% LTV. In order to qualify, new customers moving home or remortgaging to Nationwide will need a minimum annual income of £75,000 for sole applicants or £100,000 for joint applications. However, to support existing customers such as previous first-time buyers who benefited from its Helping Hand programme, there will be no minimum income requirements. For all mortgage applications made that don’t require any additional borrowing, the building society already allows borrowing up to 6.5 times income up to 95% LTV.
